How much is the security of your home worth? The good news is – not as much as you think. Technological advances and high-speed Wifi and data packages mean you can protect your home and family from a smartphone wherever you are in the world.
Ten years ago you would need to be a high earner to buy video camera monitoring with a budget of thousands required to create a video monitoring home security system. But now you can buy all the kit in one bundle including wireless sensors, camera and other peripheral items at a fraction of the cost you would have paid in the not so distant past (anything from around £200 to £600 depending on how many sensors you require).
Some systems also specialise in telecare and making sure family members are safe through GPS tracking devices. In short, using the app on your smartphone or tablet, you can monitor your home by receiving alerts, viewing photos or video footage taken by a security camera and, in some cases, control bits of your home such as lighting, heating or appliances.
Home security starts with an outdoor smart security camera which is enabled for monitoring on a smartphone, tablet or PC. You can mount it to an outside wall to overlook entrances and key areas around your home. It is connected to the mains so no need for batteries. It is also possible to subscribe to the supplier which will send you alerts when the camera sensors recognise a problem you need to be aware of.
Indoor cameras generally record up to 10 seconds of video footage as soon as the sensors detect movement. Some suppliers store images in the cloud which can be downloaded through an app and in some cases passed onto the police if there has been a burglary. Importantly, these cameras are wireless and easy to install. Add-ons to consider as an accompaniment to your CCTV and cameras include smart locks, alarms (actual ones or 'dummy' signs) and smart doorbells. Would-be burglars do not like noise from sirens so an outdoor sign or actual alarm is very useful and not all bundles come with one.
You should also consider the range of the Wifi if your property is large. You should also consider whether your smart phone is compatible. Some devices only work with add-on gadgets made by the same brand so it is worth checking before you buy. And remember that getting extra sensors may cover your current property but may not help for a bigger one. And however advanced smart home security packs are, the best deterrent is a visible one like a good old-fashioned burglar alarm.
